Small Kitchen Designs
68We spend a lot of time in kitchens. They're the room we prepare meals in, but also the room where the family can really interact with one another. Oftentimes the kitchen is the hub of activity in a house. If you're remodeling or building a new kitchen and you don't have much space, you'll have to be extra creative to get the most out of what you have to work with. Now let's talk about small kitchen design. The first important thing to keep in mind when you don't have much space is storage.
Storage in a Small Kitchen
The number one problem people have in their kitchen is space. Many frustrated cooks have nearly pulled their hair out when they run out of counter space while cooking a big meal, and everybody knows the feeling of trying to find a place for a new pot or pan. That's why the first thing you should think about when designing a kitchen for a small space is storage and counter space.
Make sure you have enough counter space in your small kitchen design. Counters are a super important kitchen feature, and you can never have enough. You'll use your counters for storing food and appliances and also for space to use while cooking. If you have a bar or otherwise plan to eat on your counters, you'll need even more space. Again, to get enough counter space you'll probably have to get creative.
One great way to maximize your counter space is to install a small kitchen island in your kitchen. This will add some extra counter space as well as storage. It will also take up space in the middle of your kitchen, though, so consider whether you have enough space to being with.
You also need to make sure you have a solid kitchen cabinet design so that you have enough space to store everything you need in the kitchen. In a smaller kitchen, you might need to install taller cabinets than you otherwise would to get extra space. You'll need to use a stepping stool, but the extra space will be worth it. You can store mixers, bowls, and other less frequently used utensils up high while keeping the lower shelves free for dishes, cups, and commonly used utensils. While you're at it, make sure that you have plenty of cabinets below your countertop. These are also great places to store cookware or even food.
Small Kitchen Appliances
There are tons of appliances made especially for small kitchens these days, everything from refrigerators to mixers to microwaves. These appliances will fit in a smaller kitchen without sacrificing utility. Here are a few ideas:
- Consider a new refrigerator. This one appliance can really change how you use your kitchen. Fridges with drawer freezers are becoming common and might offer some space advantages for a small kitchen design.
- Microwaves, toaster ovens, clock radios, and other appliances will fit under cabinets with a little work. This frees up the counter space below and can be a huge space saver. Again, these appliances don't sacrifice quality.
- Dishwashers come in many sizes, not just the large ones you're used to. Consider a space saving dishwasher to create more storage space.
- Even ovens have gotten smaller over the years, with the same bang for your buck. Consider replacing your old oven with a new, sleek, smaller one. This could free up some space in cabinets, too.
- Smaller appliances like mixers will probably have to be stored when not in use. Again, make sure you have plenty of storage space.
